Visiting Lahaina Town in Maui :
Lahaina is one of those fantastic Hawaiian towns. It has history, culture and that island vibe you need to experience to understand. Every visitor to Maui should visit while on the island.
So take a break from the beach and make sure to spend a day in town doing these 5 things!
Lahaina Front Street
Front Street is the heart of Lahaina. Indeed, it’s filled with historic wooden buildings dating from it’s early days as a whaling center. These old buildings have now been converted into restaurants, boutique stores, and art galleries. It’s one of those streets where you grab a Kona coffee and just explore.
And if you’re visiting Front Street in the evening, then you may want to check out a traditional Hawaiian luau. The Old Lahaina Luau and the Royal Lahaina Resort Luau both take place on Front Street.
Banyan Tree Park
Between Front Street and Wharf Street is Lahaina’s famous Banyan Tree. This single Banyan tree covers an entire block. Basically, there is an entire park underneath the canopy which covers a full 2/3 of an acre.
The Banyan Tree is also one of the largest and oldest in the US. It was planted in 1872 after being brought in from India. It’s so big that an art festival is held under its branches every second and fourth weekend of the month. Wow.
As mentioned, Lahaina was the center of the Hawaiian whaling industry. Ships don’t leave this port to hunt whales with harpoons anymore. But they still head out from here with cameras. Connect with the past by taking your whale watching trip from historic Lahaina Harbor.
You can also catch a boat to Lanai for the day if this rarely visited Hawaiian Island is on you bucket list.
Lahaina Historic Trail
The Lahaina Historic Trail (Ala Moolelo O Lahaina) is a self-guided walking tour that takes you to all the significant cultural and historic sites in Laihana. Yes, there are more than just great beaches in West Maui!
You will visit the old Baldwin Home built for the missionaries, the Hale Paahao, the jailhouse for sailors during the whaling period. Also get a taste of Hawaii’s Asian influence by visiting the Wo Hing Temple and the Lahaina Jodo Mission.
There are 62 historic sites in total. The guides are available at the Lahaina Visitor Center.
Lahaina Art Galleries
If you’re an art enthusiast, then Lahaina is one of the best places in Hawaii to visit.
The Old Jail Gallery is run by Lahaina Arts Society and is home to 185 member artists. Village Galleries also represents local artists and is Maui’s oldest. Even Martin Lawrence Galleries has a presence in Lahaina so you know this is a place for good art!

When visiting West Maui, we always stay at the Westin Kaananapali. This beautiful hotel has plenty of large suites and is right on the beach. I also love the many barbecue areas where you can do your own grilling. So remember your Costco card!
